The Alaro Story

The name “Alaro” is derived from the surname Ballestero dating back to medieval Spain when one Ramon Ballesteros was lord of the castle of Alaro and it’s an honor to pay homage to our ancestral name. The entire Alaro team will bring simple & flavorful new ideas that include working with small farmers and producers to get the best ingredients possible.

Located in the space where Rubicon Brewing Co was born, Alaro Craft Brewing now brings a great new vibe, a beautiful but casual interior & outdoor patio area and a super friendly staff to this time-honored space in the heart of Midtown Sacramento.

With a strong focus on well designed, well executed handcrafted beer and a seasonal, local, sustainable, and craft menu featuring a diverse selection of creative dishes from tapas-style small bites to full-bellied burgers that border on sublime, our team has curated one of the most unique restaurants on the grid.

In addition to amazing beer and amazing food, Alaro Craft Brewing features a well curated wine list, house made Sangrias, Fair Trade Sodas, Teas and Organic Soft Serve Ice Cream!
Alaro Craft Brewing is a brewery gastropub unlike any other.  Join us for lunch, dinner, or anything in between!

Ray Ballestero

Lord of the Castle

Being a homebrewer for over 35 years, Ray brings his passion and brewing skills to Alaro Brewing.

A longtime native of California, Ray has a diverse background in Holistic Health and Fair Trade. He and his wife, Annette moved back to Sacramento to pursue a new journey with Alaro. Being no stranger to the Rubicon or homebrewing his dream of owning his own establishment has come to full fruition.

An avid outdoorsman, and revered traveler his life journey has offered him unique insight to believe in core values, like celebration, value of people, and a true belief in equality. Being fair in everything he does socially, economically and environmentally. He brings that and more to his staff and customers. His philosophy is, “the best way to make a difference is to help someone stand independently”. We are honored and grateful for his gifts and the complete customer experience he brings to Alaro.

Annette Ballestero

Lady of the Castle

Our new Lady of the Castle, comes to us with a exciting array of experiences making her perfect in her now role at Alaro.

Annette has a historic restaurant background, being part of River City Brewing Co, one of the first breweries in Sacramento. Along with Rubicon, she is honored as a true pioneer.

Both Annette and Ray own and run One World Trade, a fair trade boutique in Healdsburg that offers artisans from around the world the opportunity to create a self sustainable lifestyle by creating art, decor and jewelry all good for and to the environment.

You can see some of the artisans work in and around Alaro which we proudly display. Along with her other passion, her husband Ray, they are creating a space that honors the past and welcomes the future. Her other partner is her best friend, Holly who as a dog, welcomes other friendly dogs to our patio.

Chris Keeton

Head BRewer / Wort Alchemist

Chris Keeton, a true love story beginning with the iconic Rubicon Brewing Company. Chris is our keepsake of the Rubicon and continues his passion and legacy for brewing great beer.

At a young age, he found himself working his way up in kitchens and when gifted a home brewing kit from his then fiance Lauren, realized he had a penchant for the art of brewing and chose to work hard to hone those skills. After getting married and making the move from Albuquerque to Sacramento, he found his home as a brewer at the Rubicon under the revered guidance of Scott Cramlet. After two years at the Rubicon, he furthered his training by attending the UCDavis Master Brewers Program in 2015 while continuing as the Pub Brewer at the Rubicon.

Chris learned of the closing of the Rubicon at the same point finding out he was to become a new father. Today, his new addition is our new addition and our new Cali Pale Ale, “The Bennett”.

While continuing to create his own recipes, he always had a special place for the Rubicon’s Irish Stout on nitro. You can experience some of this in his “La Luna Oatmeal Stout” served with that iconic nitro pour.

Chris brews beer to be enjoyed and worth coming back for.

Jason Azevedo

Head Chef

Where true and good chefs find their inspiration is what brings their signatures to light. Jason Azevedo found his from his Grandfather, where he feels he was taught, “real cooking”.

He started cooking in Sacramento and went to Chico’s Butte Culinary Academy, moving to the North Bay to work in Fine Dining and wineries. He started Testa Duro Salumi, featuring whole animal underground butcher shop, and pop up dining. You can find some of that passion in Alaro’s dish, Soffrito.

His following has his name on as the Chef De Cuisine of Mighty Tavern, Grange in the Citizen Hotel and most recently, Hock Farm Craft & Provisions. We now are lucky to have him creating our unique menu. His accolades include competing in Farm to Fork Butcher Breakdown and promoting Farm to Fork, using the local resources as inspiration.

“Seasonal, local, sustainable, and craft’ would be words he describes his food, using the bounty of the Sacramento region to fuel the menu. The core of it all, “no matter the day, I am only as good as my last plate”
